The demon tries to put a man to sleep, to make him forget that everything on earth is transient, and to drag him into the whirlwind of worldly affairs.

He usually succeeds in this. In that dreamlike vortex, a man's whole life passes unnoticed; he wakes up only when he finds himself at the very edge of the grave, hearing the cackle of the demon who deceived him so skillfully and terribly. All that a man was tied to, all that he loved and gained, disappears like night shadows at dawn.

Only then does it become clear to him that he has foolishly wasted the most precious thing God gave him: the time for salvation, the time he somehow killed. That is why the first ascetic rule is the remembrance of death.
